WAP stands for Wireless Application Protocol, which enables users to access mobile internet content and services from a WAP mobile phone. Currently all WAP content is a basic text information service, without graphics, colour or pictures (essentially a stripped down internet service).
Do I need a special type of phone for WAP?
Yes, you will need a special WAP phone. There is already a range of WAP phones available and there will be even more in the near future. There is no charge for having your SIM 'data enabled'.
What type of things can I do with a WAP phone?
Once you have your WAP phone, you will require a service provider, which enables you to connect to mobile internet services, sometimes referred to as a portal. This is just like companies like AOL, which allows access to the internet from a PC. There are numerous useful things that you can do with a WAP phone. Everything from finding a local restaurant, checking the weather and latest headlines, keeping up with the latest sports results and checking share prices, to sending an email and paying a bill - all done on the move, wherever you are, at anytime of the day or night.
What are the benefits of a WAP phone?
In addition to using your mobile phone to make and receive calls, the added benefit of a WAP phone is the ability to access the mobile internet whilst you are on the move. The cost of a WAP phone starts from just £50, which is much cheaper than a PC.
However, mobile internet services are in their infancy and therefore the range of content that can be viewed on a phone is currently limited, although more and more services will be coming on line in the very near future. Although there are already numerous benefits of a WAP phone now - having a wealth of information such as sports results, share prices and news and weather at your fingertips plus being able to send and receive emails.
